Friction Bearing Universal Joints

Friction bearing universal joints, known as cardan joints or pin-and-block universal joints, are produced from alloy steel to offer high strength or stainless steel for improved corrosion resistance.

These universal joints are simple, cost-effective, and capable of bearing high loads at low bearing speeds. They consist of precision-machined, selectively heat-treated, and ground components (yokes, pins, and blocks) to optimize performance and longevity.

Single plain bearing universal joints, designed to accommodate space-constrained applications, are well-equipped to handle angular misalignment of up to 45°—an advancement over conventional single u-joints. For applications featuring a substantial distance between shafts or necessitating angular misalignment of up to 90°, double u-joints prove to be the more suitable option.

Friction-bearing type pin-and-block universal joints from Runsom Precision are engineered for applications with moderate-to-high torque demands across a broad range of industries.

Runsom Precision offers friction universal joints in outer diameter sizes ranging from 3/8” to 4” and in bore sizes from 3/16” to 2” or 5mm to 35mm. These universal joints can feature finished bores with or without keyways, or they can have machinable bores to enable users to create custom sizes or geometries. All bore configurations can be equipped with a set screw.

  • The available design options include Heavy Duty, High Strength, Stainless Steel, Leveler Strength, Military Standard, and Pin & Block needle-bearing.
  • Pin joints consist of two yokes and the center block, fastened together using pins, snap rings, or rivets.
