Sheet metal gauge charts typically lists the gauge size and the corresponding thickness of the sheet metal in inches or millimeters. They are often used by fabricators, manufacturers, and engineers when specifying the size of sheet metal for a project. The chart is useful for determining the thickness of sheet metal for a particular application, and it can also be used to compare the thickness of different gauge sizes of sheet metal.

What Is the Sheet Metal Gauge?

A sheet metal gauge is a standard unit of measurement for the thickness of sheet metal. The smaller the gauge number, the thicker the sheet metal. For example, sheet metal with a gauge of 8 is thicker than one with a gauge of 10. Note that a standard exists for zinc in which its thickness is proportional to the size of the gauge number. Sheet metal is often specified by its gauge size, with thicker sheet metal being used for applications that require more strength or durability.

Sheet metal gauge is commonly used in the construction and manufacturing industries to specify the thickness of sheet metal for a particular application. Sheet metal is used in a wide range of applications, including the construction of buildings, the manufacturing of automotive and aerospace parts, and the production of appliances and other consumer goods. The gauge of the sheet metal is often specified to ensure that the sheet metal is strong enough for the intended use.

There are several different gauge systems used to specify the thickness of sheet metal, including the American Wire Gauge (AWG) system(also known as the Brown and Sharpe Gage), the Birmingham Gage (BG), and the Standard Wire Gauge (SWG) system used in the United States for sheet metal. It is important to use the correct gauge system when specifying the thickness of sheet metal, as different systems may have different gauge sizes and corresponding thicknesses.

The chart below is available for determining the equivalent sheet thickness in inches or millimeters for brass, copper, standard steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and zinc with the selected gauge size standard. The weight per unit area of the sheet can also be seen in pounds per square foot and kilograms per square meter. These charts can also be used for material selection or confirming the metal thickness for the CNC machining process.
